Work and Appetite
To Work and to Eat. Kinda.
Over the last few weeks, I’ve come to realise that my appetite is affected by the work I do. When I’m doing work I enjoy it, My appetite is good. When I’m doing work I don’t really care about, my appetite suffers.
Let’s start by detailing my work and food habits over an average week.
Mon-Wed.
I eat three times a day, usually within a six-hour window between 12 pm and 6 pm. I get approximately 230 grams of protein. Beef, chicken fish. Some fibre, some carbs. But not much.
I read, I study, I work on my blog, and by extension the website, and I work on my books and any other business that I’m planning, (a new one just hit, more on that later). I work out I go on walks, usually 20-30 minutes twice a day. I take cold showers and do breathing/meditation.
All this happens from when I wake up at 05:30 to somewhere around 14:00 - 15:00. After which I’m done for the day and can do, whatever. I usually hit the sack at about 23:00. That’s eight hours of free time (usually spent studying more) a day.
Thurs-Sat.
These days I work at the bar. From 15:00 to 01:00. Home by 02:00 if I’m lucky or 02:30 if I’m not.
I wake up at 06:00 on Thursday. 07:30 on Friday. And 08:00 on Saturday. I leave for work just before 14:00.
I try to eat the usual but never have the time, so I eat less—chicken and Steak ‘N Eggs on Thurs. Friday I try to do the usual but end up just eating the chicken and not the steak ‘n eggs. Saturday I’ll have scrambled egg on toast.
I use the rest of my time trying to get my head around studies, business, and what to read next. I work on the site and blog a little (I started writing this last week).
Then we have Sunday. After getting shitty sleep the last few days I tend to get out of bed when my body allows, so not as early as I would like. Somewhere between 8-9 am.
I fast the whole day. The last time I would eat is either 12:00 Saturday or 02:00 Sunday morning once I get home after working the bar. I’ll eat again at 12:00 on Monday. That’s a 33-34 hour fast. Before you ask, I’ve been doing this for years, and as I don’t eat sugar or many carbs, I don’t feel hungry (I should do a post about the psychology of eating). This has always been easy for me. I never used to eat much before this new diet kicked off about 4-5 years ago.
Now that I think about it, It began when I started working in bars. I’m not someone who likes taking breaks (or holidays for that matter. I just get bored). So I would just work from start to finish without a break, except for 601’s, if you know, you know.
I try to be as consistent as I can.
All this tells me is that I need to stop working in bars, at least working those hours. If they had a day job I could do, that would be better. But right now, there isn’t anything.
So I need to get started on my own shit.
I’m a Professional Photographer who dabbles in Writing and Documentary Film Making.
I’ve recently quit my job of three and a half years as a Bartender/Manager. Photography began as a hobby and quickly became a passion.
I’m a Professional Photographer, Filmmaker, Writer/Author and this website is where I’m going to document all of it. The good, the bad and the ugly.
