Journal // 18th June 2024
On this day I…
So, I usually read a quote and use that as my basis for these Journal posts. But today I haven’t come across anything.
I could talk about my sexual proclivities, but I wouldn’t want to bore you all. So instead I’m just going to grab a book and read the first thing that I see, then see where that takes us.
“To the best of my judgement, when I look at the human character I see no virtue placed there to counter justice. but I see one to counter pleasure: Self-Control” - Marcus Aurelius. Meditations: 8.39.
Is it weird that I mentioned ‘sexual proclivities’ earlier and then read this? Maybe the universe is telling me something.
Over the last few months, I’ve taken great pleasure in reading. Sure I use Audible while reading the physical book;
It generally means you read faster (I listen at 1.8x or 2x) and can retain information within. I do this to get through the books faster. If it’s dull I bin it, this can usually happen within minutes of starting. Once I’ve completed a book I decide whether I want to re-read it. Study it. Read it properly.
using Audible in this way means I can do this faster. And yes it does mean that I’m buying the book twice.
So.
Yesterday I started my new schedule. It forced me to sit down and get some work done. Timed blocks for reading rather than just reading all day because it’s easy. Writing these blog posts isn’t hard, and I do enjoy it, but I tend to take the path of least resistance. I write a bit then walk away.
My regular Friday post, for instance, has been absent since May 24th, why? laziness, frankly.
Now that I’m setting time aside every day, like now, to write this stuff. Just 90 minutes a day gets this shit done.
Though to be honest I get most of it done on Monday and the rest of the week is just making sure it sounds good. Is formatted right, and I like it. I’m not above just cutting a blog at the 11th hour if I think it’s shit.
But the real reason for setting up a schedule is so I can sit down and actually write the book I’ve been putting off. Yesterday I made some headway on that and in 100 minutes I’ll be back on that, but first I have a Huberman walk, and a Wim Hof cold shower and breathing exercise to do.
But why?
The walk clears my head after the reading and the writing I’ve just done, also it’s a fairly easy 2.4 miles 4000’ish steps. The cold shower and the breathing are just healthy.
Speaking of which I need to get ready and go do that.
