On this day I… Don’t Fear Fear.

The Way of the Superior Man - 8, Lean Just Beyond Your Fear.

This is how David Deida starts chapter eight of his book (One You Should Own by the way, HERE).

Then we get this;

In any moment, a man’s growth is optimiszed if he leans just beyond his edge, his capacity, his fear. He should not be too lazy, happily stagnating in the zone of security and comfort. Nor should he push far beyond his edge, stressing himself unnecessarily, unable to metabolise his experience. He should lean just slightly beyond the edge of fear and discomfort. Constantly. In everything he does.

If you’re not pushing yourself forward, you’ll achieve nothing, but if you push forward too fast you could derail and still achieve nothing. But by leaning forward, just enough to make the situation uncomfortable, and unknown, you’ll have to learn new skills to progress, then we have equilibrium.

Soon, that will become comfortable and you’ll start to stagnate again, so, lean over your new edge, as Deida puts it. As you progress the goalpost moves. So move with it.

Do this over and over until you achieve your goal. And apply this to all aspects of your life.

  • Health

  • Wealth

  • Relationships

  • Happiness

The idea isn’t to fear your fears or to make fear your prisoner. It’s to make Fear your ally, your companion. Fear doesn’t stalk you, it comes with you on the journey. Because without fear we achieve nothing, we need it, it guides us.

It’s the choice of Hercules, on one side you have an ethereal woman telling him that if he takes her path, which is easier (without fear) he’ll have everything he wants.

On the other side a woman in black, like death, tells him that if he takes her path, his journey will be fraught with hardship and toil (with fear).

One is the path with no fear or growth, and the other is a path with fear, where everything he gets, he earned.

In case you’re wondering, he chose the second path.

Some of you might be thinking, “he chose wrong”. You’re the lazy ones who want everything handed to you. But think on this for a second;

Nothing is for free.

There is always a price to pay.

And it will be collected.
