On this day I… Your Career is not a Life Sentence.
The Daily Stoic, 31st July.
If you’re on ‘business X,’ you’ll be familiar with all the young up-start, 10k/month crowd. Those who say working every waking moment, seven days a week, is how to succeed because success isn’t enough. You have to crush your competition, and the only way to do that is to;
WORK HARDER, LONGER, LOUDER…
While at the same time spending an unending amount of time on ‘X’ telling everyone how hard you work.
You can bet your ass they’ve already scheduled a post for Sunday morning;
“Fuck church, get to work.”
“I never sleep, I just main line COFFEE!“
“Do you work on Sundays, if not why not?”
“You want to be successful? WORK ON SUNDAY!”
FUCK OFF!!!
I wonder how much actual work these people do outside of sending tweets on the subject. The majority of it is regurgitated mass-market slogans designed to make them feel better about themselves and the rest are platitudes posted by people who just post about starting a business but aren’t actually doing it.
I guess my point is if you want to spend your early years being productive, cool. But understand, these are the best times of your life, don’t waste them sitting behind a screen, poke your head up once in a while and see what’s going on, ‘cause if you’re not careful, life will pass you by.
Building social circles in business is a good idea, and so is building them with friends you can just hang out with, and spend lazy days with. No one wants a friend who turns down every opportunity to enjoy themselves. Because soon, people will just stop calling.
Someone will bring it up and the response will be;
“Really, him? Everytime we invite him he’s busy“
Soon, the invites will stop. You’ll hit 35 years old, you’ll have your millions and all your millionaire friends. Then one day, you’ll wonder where all your real friends are.
You’ll tell yourself that they left you because they were jealous. They could hack your busy lifestyle.
But in truth, they just forgot about you.
As for your millionaire friends, they’ll only be around as long as the money does. When that goes, so will they.
So now ask yourself, what kind of friends do you want?
Those that will be with you when you die, mourning your passing?
Or those that are just gonna wonder what you’re doing with your money when you die?
Having money and a purpose is great, but not at the expense of lifelong friendships.
Make the time. If you can’t do that, make an effort. Show up, be present.
